Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, women continued to take centre stage in world literature, particularly prose. By examining the way writers tackled the issue of the place allocated to women representations in their own works, a conclusion can be drawn about the social phenomena that prevailed in a single country. In Ukrainian and Turkish realist literature between the end of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century, and in particular in social novels, representations of women also occupied an important place. Distinguishing the main types of women representations that were fundamental in the short epic genres of the women writers Marko Vovchik and Suat Dervish helps reveal their role in the realist prose of the aforementioned period. The comparative approach focuses attention on the social role of women depending on their living environment. In both the Ukrainian and Turkish social short stories, women are often the protagonists of the work, and writers give women an important role in shedding light on the negative aspects of an imperfect society that is in need of change. Through the analysed selection of the types of women representations, women emerge as not only having a physical presence in the artistic space, but also as strong personalities with positive and negative character traits, as important literary figures, who not only enjoyed a distinct form of expression but were also practically not inferior in their actions to representations of men in the moral and social dimensions.
